Total Trade in Goods: April 2023
Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €480.1 million during April, compared to a deficit of €360.4 million in the corresponding month of 2022. Imports amounted to €776.6 million, while exports totalled €296.6 million. This represents an increase of €88.7 million in imports and a decline of €30.9 million in exports over the same month of the previous year (Table 1). The rise in the value of imports was primarily due to Machinery and transport equipment (€52.5 million), while on the exports side, the main decrease was registered in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€28.4 million) (Table 3).
Total Trade in Goods: January-April 2023
During the first four months of the year, the total trade in goods deficit widened by €194.7 million when compared to the corresponding period of 2022, reaching €1,174.0 million. Imports increased by €154.0 million, while exports declined by €40.7 million, amounting to €2,551.4 million and €1,377.4 million respectively (Table 1). Higher imports were mainly recorded in Machinery and transport equipment (€89.4 million), Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€24.1 million), Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€22.9 million), Semi-manufactured goods (€22.7 million), and Food (€22.2 million). These were partly offset by a decrease in Chemicals (€28.7 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€65.2 million), and Chemicals (€35.8 million), partly offset by an increase in Machinery and transport equipment (€50.6 million) (Table 3).

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (48.8 per cent) and Asia (22.5 per cent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (36.6 per cent) and Asia (16.0 per cent). Imports from France registered the main increase (€102.2 million), whereas the main drop in imports was from Greece (€96.4 million). Exports to Germany saw the highest increase (€148.0 million), while those to France experienced the largest decrease (€91.7 million) (Table 4) .
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters: April 2023
In April, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €204.4 million, compared to a deficit of €161.7 million recorded in the same month of 2022. Imports and exports amounted to €414.5 million and €210.1 million, respectively, thus representing an increase of 11.2 per cent in imports and a decrease of 0.5 per cent in exports over the corresponding month of the previous year (Table 1).
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters1: January-April 2023
During the first four months of 2023, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters widened by €131.9 million when compared to the same period of 2022, reaching €666.4 million. Both imports and exports increased by 11.1 per cent and 3.2 per cent respectively, and amounted to €1,615.9 million and €949.5 million (Table 1).

- The Intrastat Supplementary Declaration that traders in merchandise goods must submit in respect of arrivals (imports) and dispatches (exports) of goods from and to the Member States of the European Union (EU) in compliance with Legal Notice 131 of 2004, and
