Total Trade in Goods: August 2023
Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €552.9 million during August, compared to a deficit of €553.9 million in the corresponding month of 2022. Imports amounted to €893.3 million, while exports totalled €340.4 million, representing declines in both imports and exports of €36.5 million and €35.6 million, respectively, over the same month of the previous year (Table 1). The main decreases in imports were primarily due to Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€158.4 million), and Chemicals (€46.1 million), partly offset by an increase in Machinery and transport equipment (€194.9 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Chemicals (€20.0 million), and Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€17.6 million) (Table 3).
Total Trade in Goods: January-August 2023
During the first eight months of the year, the total trade in goods deficit narrowed by €528.9 million when compared to the corresponding period of 2022, reaching €2,854.6 million. Imports stood at €5,683.0 million whereas exports reached €2,828.3 million, representing decreases of €567.9 million and €39.1 million, respectively (Table 1). Lower imports were mainly recorded in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€397.1 million), Machinery and transport equipment (€177.1 million), and Chemicals (€77.0 million), partly offset by increases in Food (€38.8 million), and Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€37.6 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€176.7 million), Chemicals (€52.2 million), and Semi-manufactured goods (€14.1 million). These were partly offset by increases in Machinery and transport equipment (€162.3 million), Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€22.9 million), and Food (€14.7 million) (Table 3).

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (54.8 per cent) and Asia (19.6 per cent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (38.5 per cent) and Asia (14.3 per cent). The highest increase in imports was recorded from Germany (€216.3 million), while imports from Greece registered the largest drop (€220.1 million). Exports to Germany registered the highest increase (€280.9 million), while those to France experienced the largest decrease (€161.2 million) (Table 4).
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters1: August 2023
In August, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €183.2 million, compared to a deficit of €231.8 million recorded in the same month of 2022. Imports and exports amounted to €403.2 million and €220.0 million, respectively, representing decreases of 14.9 per cent and 9.1 per cent over the corresponding month of the previous year (Table 1).
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters1: January-August 2023
During the first eight months of 2023, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters widened by €133.1 million when compared to the same period of 2022, reaching €1,572.7 million. Imports and exports increased by 6.3 per cent and 3.9 per cent, respectively, reaching €3,456.0 million and €1,883.3 million (Table 1).

i. The Intrastat Supplementary Declaration that traders in merchandise goods must submit in respect of arrivals (imports) and dispatches (exports) of goods from and to the Member States of the European Union (EU) in compliance with Legal Notice 105 of 2008, and
