- In March 2025, Malta registered a trade deficit of €247.7 million.
- During March 2025 a decrease of €121.1 million in imports was recorded, while exports decreased by €3.8 million, over the same month of the previous year.
- In the first three months of 2025, Malta’s trade imports from the European Union reached €1,088.5 million (58.8 per cent of total imports).
- During January-March 2025 the main increase in imports was from Portugal and the main decrease was from Spain. Conversely, in exports the main increase was recorded to Turkey and the main decrease was to the United States of America.

Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €247.7 million during March, compared to a deficit of €365.0 million in the corresponding month of 2024. Imports amounted to €614.7 million, while exports totalled €367.0 million, representing decreases in both imports and exports of €121.1 million and €3.8 million, respectively, over the same month of the previous year (Table 1).
The decrease in imports was mainly due to Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€110.1 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Chemicals (€21.6 million), and Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€18.7 million), partly offset by increases in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€22.4 million), and Machinery and transport equipment (€12.1 million) (Table 3).

During the first three months of the year, the deficit narrowed by €110.4 million when compared to the corresponding period of 2024, reaching €756.8 million. Imports stood at €1,850.3 million whereas exports reached €1,093.5 million, representing decreases of €224.7 million and €114.3 million, respectively (Table 1). Lower imports were mainly recorded in Machinery and transport equipment (€129.6 million), and Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€113.6 million). On the exports side, the main decrease was registered in Machinery and transport equipment (€142.3 million) (Table 3).

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (58.8 per cent) and Asia (23.6 per cent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (36.0 per cent) and Asia (14.4 per cent). The highest increase in imports was recorded from Portugal (€70.2 million), while imports from Spain registered the largest drop (€71.2 million). Exports to Turkey registered the highest increase (€61.5 million), while those to the United States of America experienced the largest decrease (€124.7 million) (Table 4).
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters1: March 2025
In March, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €265.3 million, compared to a deficit of €241.4 million recorded in the same month of 2024. Imports and exports amounted to €487.5 million and €222.2 million, respectively, thus representing an increase of 4.8 per cent in imports and a decrease of 0.6 per cent in exports over the corresponding month of the previous year (Table 1).

During the first three months of 2025, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters narrowed by €21.7 million when compared to the same period of 2024, reaching €679.6 million. Imports decreased by 1.6 per cent while exports remained almost at par, amounting to €1,337.7 million and €658.1 million, respectively (Table 1).
