What is a statistical concept?
A statistical concept is a statistical characteristic of a time series or an observation. It is a notion which is used throughout the statistical process.  Statistical concepts and definitions are the basis for compiling statistics.

How is the type of reporting structure to use (ESMS or ESQRS) determined?
Some quality concepts included in ESQRS are also part of ESMS; however ESQRS is a more detailed structure quality report which is producer oriented, while ESMS is user oriented. If the needs of the statistical process require detailed information on the different quality aspects, then the use of ESQRS is recommended.

Is the list of metadata reports exhaustive?
No, other reports for additional flows will be available in due course, as well as a timeseries of reports to facilitate comparisons over time.

What does the time dimension included in the title of the metadata reports refer to?
This refers to the year to which the statistics described relate, and not the year during which the report was compiled.

What is the difference between a statistical classification and a statistical code list?
In statistical classifications, an item which belongs to one particular class does not belong to any other class. These are normally presented in hierarchical format to highlight particular characteristics of the variables under study. Conversely, a code list presents different options for a number of questions included in questionnaires, in order to facilitate the analysis of different categories of the same variable.

How can I view contents of a metadata report in XML format?
XML files are machine readable. These may be viewed through the ESS Metadata Handler, an application used to generate reference metadata files and quality reports developed by Eurostat. The Metadata Handler cannot be downloaded and can only be accessed by persons working in statistical entities.

How can the different levels of statistical classifications be viewed?
A statistical classification can contain different levels of detail. A fully expanded hierarchy would provide the highest level of detail. To display rows for a level, click the appropriate outline symbol. To expand or collapse data, click the and outline symbols.
