Access to anonymised micro-data

The information you provide in this form will be used to assess whether you meet the required criteria for accreditation as a research entity or researcher approved by the NSO. Access to anonymised microdata is granted for a definite period of time. After this period elapses the terms of reference of the contract between the research entity or researcher and the NSO have to be re-negotiated accordingly.

These details will be used to enable the NSO to contact you. If you are working as part of an organisation, such as a business, university or charity, please complete the details of that organisation.

If you are a researcher not affiliated to any particular employer you should write ‘None’ as a reply to Questions g, h, i, and j in section 1 below.

Please refer to the project’s statistical purpose, e.g. matching of data sets, econometric analysis, sampling techniques etc.
You must also include any results which will be expected to come forward by means of this microdata file. If the research is part of a larger project/programme, please include the corresponding details below. Alternatively you may also attach the information in a separate document.

b. Write the name(s) of the variable(s) to be accessed from the microdata file(s) being requested as well as the reason why these variables are required. In case of a long list you may upload a PDF file instead.

Please note that should your request for microdata be granted, you need to provide the NSO with a copy of your results at least one month in advance from the date of publication of the results. These results will be checked by the NSO to ensure that anonymity of persons, households or undertakings is safeguarded.

Once approval for access to information is granted, the following conditions shall apply:


  • The NSO reserves the right to scrutinise any products or publications for disclosure control purposes before publication;
  • The research entity or researcher may be liable to criminal prosecution under the Malta Statistics Authority Act of 2000 if identifiable information is disclosed to any other person or body without the written authority of the Director General of the NSO;
  • Access to information is only for the purposes of statistical research that will serve the public good as agreed in writing with the Director General of the NSO;
  • The Director General of the NSO is to be informed of any matters or events that may affect the obligations under the contract, the recognition as a research entity or researcher, or any other matter in the written agreement relating to this use of confidential information;
  • Access to confidential information will be granted for a limited period as stipulated in the agreement and after the contractual agreement is signed by both parties;

  • the accuracy of any information you provide to support your application;
  • your understanding of the conditions specified above;
  • that you will abide by any other requirements communicated to you by the Director General of the NSO relating to this use of potentially confidential information.
