The International Protection Agency (IPA) is Malta’s national authority responsible for the processing and evaluation of applications for international protection that are lodged in Malta. The agency ensures that each case is assessed in line with national and international obligations.

The IPA also is responsible for collecting and transmitting a wide range of official statistics related to international protection, including asylum applications, first-time applicants, first-instance decisions, withdrawn applications, pending cases and resettled persons.

The IPA is regulated by the International Protection Act (Chapter 420 of the Laws of Malta).
