Am I really obliged by law to reply to the NSO?
The NSO conducts surveys under the Malta Statistics Authority Act (Cap. 422) and in line with EU Regulation (EC) No. 223/2009 on European statistics.
It is usually clearly stated in the invitation or cover letter that participation is obligatory.
You are legally obliged to respond to NSO surveys. Not doing so could be considered a breach of the Malta Statistics Authority Act, which may result in:
- Fines or other administrative actions
- Follow-up reminders or contact by the NSO.
