7.1 Agriculture
This chapter provides statistics on the agriculture and fisheries activities by region in MALTA. The first part provides information on the sales by quantity and value of produced fruit and vegetables. Following this, a series of indicators related to livestock show the number of heads and type of livestock that were reared as well as the number of licences that were operating locally. Then, the last part covers the local fisheries sector and portrays data on the quantity and value of fish landings recorded in MALTA by the different fish species.

Fruit and Vegetables: 2024
… 93.8 per cent of the total quantity of vegetables, or €22.2 million, was produced in the Malta region.
… 85.2 per cent of the total quantity of fruit, or €3.4 million, was produced in Malta region.
… Gozo and Comino region yielded €1.9 million worth of vegetables and €0.2 million worth of fruit.
Livestock heads and licences: 2024
… 73.3 per cent of the total licences were registered in the Malta region, while the Gozo and Comino region accounted for the remaining 26.7 per cent.
… the highest number of reared livestock heads in the Malta region was that of pigs while in the Gozo and Comino region was that of cattle.

Methodological Notes
1. The Census of Agriculture 2020 was carried out in conformity with the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/1874.
2. The Integrated Farm Statistics Survey conducted in 2023 was carried out according to Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/2286.
3. Information on agricultural output that is sold through organised markets is compiled by the NSO via administrative data received on a monthly basis.
4. Regional data on the sales of fruit and vegetables that is collected through the administrative sources is dependent on the residency of the respective farmer and independent of the final place of the farmer’s consignment at any of the local organised markets.
5. Data is recorded by crop, quantity, value and average unit price.
6. Data collection on cattle, pigs, sheep and goats is in accordance with EU Regulation (EC) No. 1165/2008.
