Total Trade in Goods: January 2024
Data in this news release presents all international trade in goods registered up to the indicated cut-off date. Provisional data recorded a total trade in goods deficit of €277.4 million during January, compared to a deficit of €272.3 million in the corresponding month of 2023. Imports amounted to €634.2 million, while exports totalled €356.8 million, representing drops over the same month of the previous year in both imports and exports of €23.3 million and €28.5 million, respectively (Table 1). The main decreases in imports were primarily due to Machinery and transport equipment (€18.8 million), Semi-manufactured goods (€13.3 million), and Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (€9.5 million). These were partly offset by increases in Food (€8.9 million), and Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€7.8 million). On the exports side, the main decreases were registered in Miscellaneous manufactured articles (€20.2 million), and Machinery and transport equipment (€13.5 million) (Table 3).

Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (53.1 per cent) and Asia (23.8 per cent). Similarly, exports were mostly directed to the European Union (35.1 per cent) and Asia (11.5 per cent). The highest increase in imports was recorded from Trinidad & Tobago (€25.6 million), while imports from Algeria registered the largest drop (€33.0 million). Exports to the United States of America registered the highest increase (€3.6 million), while those to South Korea experienced the largest decrease (€7.9 million) (Table 4).
Trade in Goods excluding specific chapters1: January 2024
In January, the deficit of trade in goods excluding specific chapters amounted to €207.3 million, compared to a deficit of €170.7 million recorded in the same month of 2023. Imports and exports amounted to €416.4 million and €209.1 million, respectively, thus representing decreases of 0.5 per cent and 15.7 per cent over the corresponding month of the previous year (Table 1).
