Matul l-ewwel kwart tal-2023, l-aċċidenti u l-persuni midruba fihom żdiedu meta mqabblin mal-istess żmien fis-sena taʼ qabel. L-imwiet fl-aċċidenti tat-traffiku kienu jammontaw għal erbaʼ min-nies.
L-għadd taʼ aċċidenti tat-traffiku rrappurtati tul l-ewwel kwart tal-2023 laħaq it-3,822, li jirrefletti żjieda taʼ 6.3 fil-mija fuq l-istess żmien fl-2022. L-akbar numru taʼ aċċidenti ġew irreġistrati fid-distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port bʼ1,369 każ jew 35.8 fil-mija tal-aċċidenti kollha (Tabella nru 1).
Il-persuni midruba żdiedu bi 13.3 fil-mija jew 367 meta mqabblin mal-istess perjodu fl-2022. Il-persuni midruba gravi ammontaw għal 96, u kienu jikkonsistu minn 52 sewwieq, 8 passiġġieri u 36 persuna miexja/ċiklisti/oħrajn. Sewwieq u tliet persuni li kienu mexjin mietu bil-ġrieħi li ġarrbu (Tabelli nri 4 – 6). Matul l-ewwel tliet xhur tal-2023, l-imwiet mill-aċċidenti tat-traffiku naqsu bʼħamsa meta mqabblin mal-istess perjodu fl-2022 (Ċart nru 1).

L-akbar għadd taʼ dawk li weġġgħu gravi kienu rġiel (77.1 fil-mija). Barra minn hekk, il-persuni kollha li mietu fl-aċċidenti tat-traffiku kienu rġiel. 39.8 fil-mija tat-tidrib kien jinvolvi persuni taʼ bejn is-26 u l-40 sena (Tabella nru 5).
L-akbar għadd taʼ tidrib mill-aċċidenti tat-traffiku (53.1 fil-mija) kienu jinvolvu karrozzi tal-passiġġieri. Warajhom, ġew dawk l-aċċidenti li kienu jinvolvu l-muturi (34.6 fil-mija) u l-vetturi tal-ġarr tal-merkanzija (6.5 fil-mija). L-erbat imwiet kienu jinvolvu ħabta bejn żewġ vetturi li ħalliet sewwieq mejjet, u tliet persuni li kienu mexjin meta ntlaqtu minn vettura. L-għadd taʼ ċiklisti li kienu nvoluti fʼaċċidenti tat-traffiku kienu jlaħqu għal tmienja, li sitta minnhom indarbu ħafif u t-tnejn l-oħra weġġgħu gravi (Tabelli nri 6 u 7). It-tidrib ikkaġunat minn ħbit bejn vetturi kien jifforma l-akbar numru taʼ tidrib bʼ64.3 fil-mija tat-tidrib kollu li ġara fʼdawn l-aċċidenti tat-traffiku (Tabella nru 7).
Fil-jum tal-Ħamis ġraw kemm l-akbar għadd taʼ tidrib bʼ65 tidriba kif ukoll l-akbar għadd taʼ aċċidenti bʼ621 każ jew 16.2 fil-mija tat-total (Tabella nru 8). Il-maġġoranza tal-aċċidenti tat-traffiku seħħew fil-ħin taʼ bejn id-disgħa u nofsinhar (09:00 – 11:59) bi 844 każ jew 22.1 fil-mija tat-total; segwiti minn dawk li ġraw bejn nofsinhar u t-tlieta taʼ waranofsinhar (12:00 – 14:59) bi 828 każ. L-inqas għadd taʼ aċċidenti seħħew bejn it-tlieta u s-sitta taʼ filgħodu (03:00 – 05:59) bʼ60 każ (Tabella nru 9).
L-ogħla inċidenza taʼ aċċidenti tat-traffiku kienet irreġistrata fʼBirkirkara bʼ271 każ, segwita minn Ħal Qormi u Il-Mosta, bʼ220 u bʼ183 każ rispettivament (Tabella nru 10, Mappa nru 1 u Ċart nru 5).
L-Għarb, Il-Qala, L-Għasri, Ta’ Kerċem, Ix-Xgħajra, San Lawrenz u Il-Fontana rreġistraw anqas minn ħames aċċidenti tat-traffiku. (Mappa nru 1 u Tabella nru 10).

Id-Distrett taʼ Għawdex u Kemmuna wera tnaqqis fl-aċċidenti tat-traffiku, mentri d-distretti l-oħrajn kollha wrew żjidiet meta mqabblin mal-ewwel kwart tas-sena taʼ qabel. Id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana rreġistra l-ogħla żjieda fil-persentaġġ tal-aċċidenti tat-traffiku bi 12.3 fil-mija, segwit mid-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port bʼżjieda taʼ 7.7 fil-mija (Tabella nru 1 u Mappa nru 2).

1. Road traffic accidents data is compiled from administrative information provided by the Police Department and the Malta Insurance Association (Guard and Warden Service House Limited).
2. Definitions:
a. Total road traffic accidents consist of the road traffic accidents involving casualties (Police reports) and the minor road traffic accidents without casualties (Police and Warden reports).
b. Non-injury (minor) road traffic accidents refer to accidents assessed by Wardens and/or the Police involving at least one vehicle and in which no persons are injured. Non-injury road traffic accidents which are either not reported or directly reported to Insurance Agencies by means of the Traffic Accident Form (i.e. where no Police or Wardens are called on the accident scene and are settled by the completion of the relevant form) are not accounted for.
c. Insignificant injury is determined by the Police as the sustaining of a very minimal injury (e.g. bruise, scratch, etc.) or shock due to accident which, in most cases, requires very basic treatment or no treatment at all.
d. The definition of slight injury is as listed in Art. 221 et sequitur of the Criminal Code, Chapter 9 of the Laws of Malta.
e. The definition of grievous injury is as listed in Art. 216 et sequitur of the Criminal Code, Chapter 9 of the Laws of Malta.
f. UNECE defines road fatal injury as: “Any person who was killed outright or who died within 30 days as a result of the accident”.
g. Road traffic accident fatalities data may be subject to revisions. For certain cases, the NSO may need to wait for the cause of the fatality to be duly established by the conclusions of Magisterial Inquiry.
3. The casualty-to-accident ratio indicates the risk level of suffering an injury in an accident. Therefore, a higher percentage rate means that the corresponding accidents were more serious (i.e. more persons were injured).
