Errata Corrige: Instab żball fʼTabella nru 5 li tagħti tagħrif dwar il-‘General English: Standard’, l-‘Intensive English’ u l-‘English specific purposes’, u minħabba fʼhekk, kellhom jiġu aġġornati t-tielet punt ewlieni, ir-rabaʼ paragrafu tal-kummentarju u Ċart nru 3. Id-dokumenti online ġew emendati fit-8 taʼ Ġunju 2023 fid-disgħa taʼ filgħodu.

Fl-2022, l-istudenti barranin li jmorru l-korsijiet tal-iskejjel bil-liċenzja fʼMalta għat-Tagħlim tal-Ilsien Ingliż (ELT) kienu jlaħħqu is-56,675, li huma żjieda taʼ 28,822 fuq l-2021.

Il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti li kienu qed imorru xi kors tal-ilsien Ingliż fʼMalta kienu ġejjin mill-Italja (16.3 fil-mija), minn Franza (13.1 fil-mija) u mill-Ġermanja (12.6 fil-mija). Bʼkollox, 70.5 fil-mija tal-istudenti kienu ġejjin minn xi pajjiż tal-Unjoni Ewropea (UE) (Tabella nru 1).

Il-parti l-kbira tal-istudenti tal-lingwa kellhom sa 15-il sena jew anqas, li kienu jammontaw għal 24.1 fil-mija tal-għadd kollu tal-istudenti li kienu qed imorru l-korsijiet tal-ELT. Studenti taʼ 50 sena u aktar kienu ftit u kienu jgħoddu 4,639. L-istudenti femminili kienu aktar minn dawk maskili u kienu jifformaw 62.3 fil-mija tal-istudenti kollha tal-EFL (Tabella nri 2 u 3).

Lulju kien ix-xahar meta l-iskejjel bil-liċenzja tal-ELT fʼMalta kellhom l-aktar attendenzi bʼ21.6 fil-mija tan-numru totali annwali. Dan kien segwit mix-xhur taʼ Awwissu u Ottubru li kellhom 17.5 fil-mija u 9.7 fil-mija tal-attendenzi kollha, rispettivament (Tabella nru 4).

Il-kors li l-akbar għadd taʼ studenti qagħdu għalih kien il-‘General English: Standard’, li għamluh total taʼ 39,351 student, jew 69.4 fil-mija. Warajh, kien hemm il-korsijiet tal-‘Intensive English’ li għamluhom 20.7 fil-mija tal-istudenti kollha (Tabella nru 5).

L-istudenti barranin miktubin mal-iskejjel tat-Tagħlim tal-Ilsien Ingliż (ELT) għamlu 246,314 ġimgħa tal-istudenti. Il-biċċa l-kbira tal-korsijiet (99.3 fil-mija tal-ġimgħat kollha tal-istudenti) saru bil-preżenza tal-persuna, filwaqt li l-korsijiet online kienu biss 0.7 fil-mija. Ras għal ras, l-istudenti qagħdu medja taʼ 4.3 ġimgħat, tnaqqis taʼ 0.6 meta mqabbla mas-sena taʼ qabel (Tabella nru 7). Bʼmedja taʼ 14.5-il ġimgħa, l-istudenti mill-Kolombja kellhom l-akbar għadd taʼ ġimgħat tal-istudenti. Warajhom, kien hemm l-istudenti Sud Koreani u Ċileni li qagħdu 13.3 u 13.1-il ġimgħa, rispettivament (Tabelli nri 8 u 9).

L-istaff tal-għalliema fʼdawn l-iskejjel kien jammonta għal 618, bl-akbar għadd tagħhom (26.2 fil-mija) ikun fl-età taʼ 55 sena u aktar. L-għalliema nisa kienu jlaħħqu għal 69.7 fil-mija tal-istaff kollu (Tabella nru 10). L-istaff li mhumiex għalliema kienu jlaħħqu għal 511, li 65.8 fil-mija tagħhom kienu jaħdmu full-time (Tabelli nri 10 u 11)

Errata Corrige: A mistake was detected in Table 5, in the data illustrated for General English Standard, Intensive English and English specific purposes. As a result, the third salient point, fourth paragraph in the commentary and Chart 3 were also updated. Online documents were amended on 8 June 2023 at 09:00 hrs.

Methodological Notes

1. Data used in this News Release is based on information collected by the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation which was subsequently analysed by NSO.

2. Data was collected by the ELT Council during the period December 2021-February 2022. All local licensed English Language Teaching (ELT) schools operating in 2020 responded to this questionnaire. A full list of ELT schools can be accessed here.

3. Breakdowns by country are based on the students’ citizenship as provided by the student. Thus, figures for foreign citizens are not directly comparable to other tourism figures published by the NSO.

4. In 2021, following disruptions and unprecedented scenarios due to COVID-19, foreign students attended both physical courses in Malta, as well as online courses.

5. For the scope of this release ‘teaching/academic staff’ includes all ELT permit holders. Staff employed with different schools carrying out the same role are counted once.

6. Figures on type of course followed and type of accommodation cannot be compared with data of previous years due to methodological enhancements held in 2020.

7. Definitions:

ELT schools refer to institutions which provide English-related courses for foreign students. More information can be accessed here

Teaching/Academic staff refer to professional personnel directly involved in teaching students, including teachers, assistant teachers, ELT instructors and other ELT permit holders.

Non-Teaching staff refer to persons employed by educational institutions who have no instructional responsibilities, and do not hold an ELT permit. Examples are school management staff, front office staff, group leaders, administration staff, sales, marketing and reservations staff.

Full-time employment: includes employed persons on a full-time basis.

Part-time employment: includes employed persons whose normal hours are less than those of comparable full-time workers.

Casual employment: includes temporary workers, working irregular hours, who are employed on a part-time basis.

8. Number of student weeks by foreign students is calculated as follows: total number of days divided by seven.

9. Average number of student weeks per student is calculated as follows: total number of weeks divided by total number of students.
