Summary:
The Transport Statistics publication – 2021 edition, is yet another in the series of NSO’s publications on transport. As with previous editions, it presents a collection of detailed statistics on passenger and freight transport by road, sea, and air during 2020. Various stakeholders, including businesses, urban planning experts, and port management consultants, should find this publication rich information and data useful.
This year’s publication once again includes statistical results complemented by commentaries, spatial maps and charts that depict a better picture on the salient aspects of this publication.

Air Transport
In 2020 …
… passenger traffic at the MIA decreased by 76.0% when compared to 2019.
… UK and Italy remained the two most popular destinations in terms of total passengers’ movement,
registering decreases in passengers’ movement over 2019 by 79.9% and 76.8% respectively.
Sea Transport
In 2020 …
… the stock of vessels registered under the Maltese flag amounted to 8,168.
… cruise liner embarkations from Malta and landings in Malta both decreased by 99.9% over 2019.
… the average rate of passengers and vehicles per trip crossing between Malta and Gozo amounted to 130
and 53 respectively.
… passengers carried between Valletta and The Three Cities totalled 179,249 (-68.7%), while those carried
between Valletta and Sliema totalled 227,589 (-75.0%).
Road Transport
In 2020 …
… the number of reported traffic accidents decreased by 24.5% over 2019, with 34.7% of these accidents
recorded in the Northern Harbour district.
… traffic casualties decreased by 28.4% over 2019.
… injuries sustained by 10 drivers, one passenger and one pedestrian proved fatal.
… the stock of licensed motor vehicles increased at an average net rate of 13 vehicles per day.
… passenger cars accounted for 76.6% of total licensed motor vehicles but motorcycle/e-bicycle/pa-bicycle
registered the largest increase at 6.1% over 2019.
… 59.3% of total licensed motor vehicles had petrol engines.
… alternative powered motor vehicles registered an increase of 26.5% over 2019.
… newly licensed motor vehicles amounted to 19,480, or 27.3 per cent less than 2019.
… 58.50% of newly licensed motor vehicles were used.
