Summary:
The Transport Statistics publication – 2022 edition, is yet another in the series
of NSO’s publications on transport. As with previous editions, it presents a
collection of detailed statistics on passenger and freight transport by road,
sea, and air during 2021. The myriad of data and information provided make
this publication valuable for various stakeholders, including businesses, urban
planning experts, and port management consultants.
The detailed commentaries accompanied by statistical tables, charts and spatial maps depict a better picture on the salient aspects of this publication. Furthermore, the statistics provided also show the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic during the presented years.

Air Transport
In 2021 …
… passenger traffic at the MIA increased by 45.4% when compared to 2020.
… Italy and UK remained the two most popular destinations in terms of total passengers’ movement, registering increases in passengers’ movement over 2020 by 46.0% and 40.4% respectively.
Sea Transport
In 2021 …
… the stock of vessels registered under the Maltese flag amounted to 8,631.
… cruise liner embarkations from Malta increased by 7,892 and passenger landings in Malta increased by 9,771 over 2020.
… the average rate of passengers and vehicles per trip crossing between Malta and Gozo amounted to 116 and 45 respectively.
… passengers carried between Valletta and The Three Cities totalled 201,806 (+12.6%), while those carried between Valletta and Sliema totalled 369,678 (+62.4%).
Road Transport
In 2021 …
… the number of reported traffic accidents increased by 2,185 over the previous year, reaching 14,135, with 35.3% of these accidents recorded in the Northern Harbour district.
… traffic casualties increased by 32.9% over 2020..
… injuries sustained by five drivers and four pedestrians proved fatal.
… the stock of licensed motor vehicles increased at an average net rate of 29 vehicles per day.
… passenger cars accounted for 75.8% of total licensed motor vehicles but e-kick scooters registered the largest increase over 2020.
… 59.2% of total licensed motor vehicles had petrol engines.
… alternative powered motor vehicles registered an increase of 61.6% over 2020.
… newly licensed motor vehicles amounted to 21,034, or 8.0 per cent more than 2020.
