Il-Jum Dinji tal-Popolazzjoni: 11 ta’ Lulju 2023
NR119/2023
Data tal-Ħruġ: 10 ta’ Lulju 2023
Fi tmiem l-2022, il-popolazzjoni totali ta’ Malta u Għawdex kienet stmata li tlaħħaq il-542,051 persuna, li hija żjieda ta’ 4.2 fil-mija meta mqabbla mas-sena ta’ qabel.

L-istimi tal-popolazzjoni maħruġin f’din l-istqarrija tal-aħbarijiet huma bbażati fuq l-istima ta’ tmiem is-sena 2021 li kienet riveduta bħala riżultat tal-aħħar Ċensiment tal-Popolazzjoni u tad-Djar. L-istima riveduta għall-2021 tieħu post l-istima li kienet maħruġa qabel għal din is-sena ta’ referenza. Din l-istima aġġornata toħroġ mir-reviżjonijiet inter-ċensali tas-serje kronoloġika tal-popolazzjoni li għaddejjin bħalissa. Aktar reviżjonijiet għas-serje tal-popolazzjoni mill-2012 sal-2021 se joħorġu aktar tard din is-sena.

Minħabba r-reviżjoni tal-istima tal-popolazzjoni tal-2021, issa hemm waqfa temporanja fis-serje. Għalhekk, l-istimi tal-popolazzjoni u l-migrazzjoni maħruġin fʼdin l-istqarrija ma jistgħux jiġu mqabbla maċ-ċifri tas-serje kronoloġika li kienu maħruġin sʼissa.

Ir-raġuni ewlenija taż-żjieda fil-popolazzjoni kienet il-migrazzjoni netta totali (l-immigrazzjoni tnaqqas l-emigrazzjoni) b’total ta’ 21,798 persuna. Iċ-ċittadini ta’ pajjiżi terzi kienu jirrappreżentaw 83.1 fil-mija tal-migrazzjoni netta totali fl-2022, filwaqt li 65.8 fil-mija tal-migrazzjoni netta totali kienu rġiel (Tabella nru 1).

Fi tmiem l-2022, il-popolazzjoni residenti totali kienet tgħodd kważi 53 fil-mija rġiel. Persuni taħt l-età ta’ 18-il sena kienu jiffurmaw 15.1 fil-mija tal-popolazzjoni totali, filwaqt li 18.6 fil-mija kellhom 65 sena jew aktar. Minn dawn, 3,395 persuna — 2,415-il mara u 980 raġel — kellhom 90 sena jew aktar (Tabella nru 2).

Ċart nru 1. Il-popolazzjoni sħiħa fil-31 ta’ Diċembru 2022 bil-gruppi tal-età u s-sess

Meta mqabbel mas-sena ta’ qabel, l-għadd ta’ twelid ta’ trabi ħajjin lir-residenti naqas bi 2 fil-mija fl-2022 (Tabella nru 3). Mill-ġenituri li welldu fl-2022, 39.7 fil-mija kellhom bejn it-30 u l-34 sena fiż-żmien tat-twelid (Tabella nru 4). Fl-2022, l-imwiet tar-residenti żdiedu b’1.6 fil-mija meta mqabblin mas-sena preċedenti (Tabella nru 5). Mill-4,230 mewta ta’ residenti li seħħew matul l-2022, 67.4 fil-mija kienu persuni li kellhom 75 sena jew aktar meta mietu (Tabella nru 6). Iż-żjieda naturali kompliet tonqos fl-2022, u laħqet l-aktar valur baxx irreġistrat matul dawn l-aħħar ħmistax-il sena, dak ta’ 79 (Ċart nru 2).

Additional Tables and Charts

Population estimates published in this news release are based on the end of year 2021 estimate which has been revised as a result of the latest Census of Population and Housing. The revised estimate for 2021 supersedes the previous estimate published for this reference year.  This updated estimate results from the ongoing intercensal revisions of the population time series. Further revisions to the population series from 2012 to 2021 will be disseminated later in the year.

Due to the revision of the 2021 population estimate there is now a temporary break in series. It is therefore currently not possible to compare the estimates on population and migration in this news release with the currently published time series.

Emigration: the action by which a natural person leaves his or her usual residence in the territory of the Member State for a period that is, or is expected to last, a minimum of 12 months. This figure is measured by summing up the counts of all employment termination forms which ended during the reference year and residence permit holders who fail to extend their permits during the reference year, together with their dependants; resettled or repatriated asylum seekers who were previously given protection and other Maltese emigrants.

Immigration: the action by which a natural person establishes his or her usual residence in a territory of a State for a period that is, or is expected to last, a minimum of 12 months. This figure is measured by summing up the count of all new employment engagement forms and residence permit holders, their dependants, asylum seekers granted protection, returned Maltese migrants and adoptions of children from foreign countries.

Natural increase: the difference between the number of live births and the number of deaths during a reference year.

● Total population: all persons residing in Maltese Islands. The total population at the end of year t, is computed using the equation Pt = Pt-1 + Bt – Dt + It – Et , where:

i.  Pt is the total resident population at the end of year t,

ii.  Pt-1 is the total resident population at the end of year t-1,

iii. Bt is the total number of babies whose birth parent was resident in Malta during year t,

iv.  Dt is the total number of registered deaths of persons resident in Malta during year t,

vi.  Et is the total emigration of both Maltese and foreign nationals resident in Malta registered during year t who leave the country for a period of at least 12 months.

Resident live births: all babies whose parent(s) is(are) resident in Malta at the time of birth. Therefore the definition excludes babies born to parents who are resident abroad.

Usual residents of a specific geographical area are:

i.  those who have lived in their place of usual residence for a continuous period of at least 12 months before the reference time; or
