Fis-sena akkademika 2021-2022, l-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja kienu jgħoddu mat-58,377, żieda ta’ 0.6 fil-mija fuq is-sena akkademika taʼ qabel.

Il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja kienu subien, b’51.9 fil-mija (Ċart nru 1). Il-proporzjonijiet bejn is-sessi żdiedu ftit b’0.1 punt perċentwali għan-numru ta’ nisa rreġistrati meta mqabblin mas-sena skolastika ta’ qabel (Tabella nru 1).

Matul is-sena akkademika 2021-2022, 46.1 fil-mija tal-istudenti rreġistrati kellhom bejn il-ħames u l-għaxar snin. Warajhom, kien hemm dawk ta’ bejn il-11 u l-15-il sena, b’37.3 fil-mija (Ċart nru 2; Tabella nru 1).

Nota: Il-persentaġġi jista’ jkun ma jgħoddux għal mija fil-mija minħabba l-arrotondament.

L-istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-istat irrappreżentaw 58.9 fil-mija tar-reġistrazzjonijiet kollha. Dawn kienu segwiti mill-iskejjel tal-knisja b’27.4 fil-mija, filwaqt li studenti rreġistrati fi skejjel indipendenti ammontaw għal 13.7 fil-mija tar-reġistrazzjonijiet kollha f’dawn il-livelli (Tabella nru 1).

Fl-2021-2022, l-għadd sħiħ ta’ studenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni obbligatorja kien ta’ 49,033. Minn dawn, 55.1 fil-mija attendew l-iskola primarja, filwaqt li l-44.9 fil-mija l-oħra attendew l-iskola sekondarja. Meta mqabblin mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel, l-istudenti żdiedu b’0.4 fil-mija u 0.9 fil-mija fl-iskejjel primarji u sekondarji, rispettivament (Tabella nru 2). Aktar minn nofs it-tfal kollha rreġistrati f’kull livell ta’ edukazzjoni obbligatorja attendew skejjel immexxija mill-istat (Ċart nru 3).

Id-daqs medju tal-klassi għall-iskejjel kollha fil-livell primarju kien ta’ 17.2-il student għal kull klassi, filwaqt li fil-livell sekondarju il-medja kienet ta’ 18.7-il student għal kull klassi. Id-daqs medju tal-klassi kien l-aktar baxx fl-iskejjel statali, filwaqt li l-iskejjel tal-knisja kellhom l-ogħla daqs medju tal-klassi, b’mod partikolari fis-Sitt sena tal-primarja bi 23.8 student għal kull klassi (Tabella nru 3).

Fl-2021-2022, id-distrett li jilqa’ fih l-akbar għadd ta’ livelli ta’ skejjel kien id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port (33.7 fil-mija), segwit mid-Distrett tan-Nofsinhar tal-Port (18.9 fil-mija) (Ċart nru 4; Tabella nru 4). Sadattant, il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti attendew skejjel li jinsabu fid-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port (37.5 fil-mija), segwiti mid-Distrett tan-Nofsinhar tal-Port (17.1 fil-mija) (Ċart nru 4; Tabella nru 5a; Mappa nru 1).

Ċart nru 4. L-għadd ta’ livelli edukattivi fl-iskejjel u n-numru ta’ studenti rreġistrati, bil-livell tal-klassi u d-distrett tal-iskola

Id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port reġa’ kien fuq nett tal-lista tad-distretti li fihom kienu joqogħdu l-istudenti ta’ minn qabel il-primarja sas-sekondarji (26.9 fil-mija), warajh, kien hemm id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana (18.9 fil-mija) (Tabella nru 6a; Mappa nru 2). Aktar minn żewġ terzi tal-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni formali ta’ qabel il-primarja, il-primarja u s-sekondarja attendew skejjel li jinsabu fid-distrett tar-residenza tagħhom, filwaqt li l-31.6 fil-mija l-oħra marru f’distrett ieħor bl-għan li jattendu l-iskola (Ċart nru 5).

Mill-għadd kollu tal-istudenti rreġistrati, 85.7 fil-mija kienu Maltin, mentri 14.3 fil-mija kienu ta’ ċittadinanza barranija – 8.6 fil-mija ma kinux ċittadini tal-UE, filwaqt li 5.7 fil-mija kienu ċittadini oħra tal-UE (Tabella nru 1). L-istudenti barranin irreġistrati żdiedu bi 3.2 fil-mija meta mqabblin mas-sena akkademika 2020-2021. Mill-istudenti barranin, 60.0 fil-mija ma kinux ċittadini tal-UE. L-akbar grupp ta’ studenti barranin kienu Taljani (13.4 fil-mija). Warajhom, ġew l-istudenti Brittaniċi (8.0 fil-mija), l-istudenti Sirjani (7.2 fil-mija), l-istudenti Serbi (6.3 fil-mija) u l-istudenti Libjani (6.0 fil-mija) (Tabella nru 7).

1. Il-persentaġġi ma jgħoddux għal mija fil-mija minħabba li l-istudenti li kienu qegħdin jitgħallmu aktar minn lingwa barranija waħda kienu magħdudin għal aktar minn darba.
2. Iċ-ċifri għas-sena akkademika 2020-2021 kienu riveduti.

Meta wieħed iħares lejn il-lingwi studjati mill-istudenti rreġistrati fil-livell sekondarju, l-aktar lingwa barranija studjata fil-livell sekondarju (minbarra l-lingwi uffiċjali tal-Malti u l-Ingliż) kienet it-Taljan, segwit mill-Franċiż, l-Ispanjol u l-Ġermaniż. Aktar minn nofs l-istudenti rreġistrati fil-livell sekondarju studjaw it-Taljan (54.4 fil-mija), filwaqt li ftit aktar minn kwart tal-istudenti studjaw il-Franċiż matul is-sena akkademika ta’ referenza (25.3 fil-mija) (Ċart nru 6).

Meta mqabblin mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel, kienu osservati żidiet fl-għadd ta’ studenti li kienu qegħdin jistudjaw it-Taljan u l-Ispanjol fis-sena akkademika 2021-2022. Fl-istess żmien, kien hemm inqas studenti fil-livell sekondarju li kienu qegħdin jistudjaw lingwi barranin oħra, inklużi il-Franċiż, il-Ġermaniż, u l-Għarbi meta mqabblin mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel. In-numru ta’ studenti li kienu qegħdin jistudjaw iċ-Ċiniż u r-Russu baqa’ konsistenti mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel. (Ċart nru 6).

Methodological Notes

1. Education statistics presented in this news release are processed by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on an annual basis in accordance with European Regulations (EC) 452/2008 and (EU) 912/2013. These regulations establish the basis of information to be collected from educational institutions at all levels of education and all types of institutions. By adhering to these regulations, all education statistics collected and processed by the NSO are comparable to other European countries following the same regulatory standards.

2. Data collection is carried out during April of each year. The reference period for the information provided is the end of March of the reference academic year.

3. All information required for state administered educational institutions is obtained from register data provided directly from the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR). Questionnaires to pre-primary, primary and secondary non-state educational institutions are sent via email. All incoming questionnaires are processed through a custom-made computer software.

4. Students enrolled in pre-primary (excluding childcare), primary and secondary education are included in this news release. Figures include students enrolled in state, church and private institutions, unless otherwise specified.

5. Figures include students who attend special schools. Special schools are resource centres to support the inclusion of students with individual needs in all mainstream schools in Malta and Gozo.​

6. Education Statistics data is provided by NSO to Eurostat on an annual basis in a dedicated questionnaire.

8. Owing to the UK’s exit from the European Union (with effect from 1 February 2020), UK data is statistically classified as non-EU from academic year 2019-2020 in the tables relating to citizenship. Comparability between periods should be treated with caution.

9. Definitions:

● Formal education: Formal education is an institutionalised, intentional and planned type of education which is provided by public organisations and recognised private bodies. It consists primarily of initial education designed for children and young people before their first entry to the labour market. It also includes other types of education such as vocational, special needs and adult education provided they are recognised as part of the formal education system by the relevant national education authorities.

● Mandatory education in Malta is compulsory for all children and youths aged from five (5) to fifteen (15) years, both year inclusive, as defined in Chapter 605 of the Laws of Malta (The Education Act). Compulsory education covers six years of primary education followed by five years of secondary education.

● Class refers to a group of students who are physically following a common course of study in the same space.

● Age is calculated as at 1st January of the reference academic year. For example, for academic year 2021-2022, age is calculated as at 1st January 2022.

● General education: Programmes that are designed to develop learners’ general knowledge, skills and competencies, as well as literacy and numeracy skills, often to prepare students for more advanced education programmes at the same or higher ISCED levels and to lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

● Locality of school refers to the locality where the physical campus is registered.

● Locality of residence refers to the locality where the student is recorded to reside.
