  • Bʼkollox, 60,197 student kienu rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja.
  • Il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti li kienu rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja kienu subien (31,195 student jew 51.8 fil-mija).
  • L-istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-Istat irrappreżentaw 59.6 fil-mija tar-reġistrazzjonijiet kollha.
  • Id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port kellu joqogħdu fih l-akbar għadd taʼ studenti fl-edukazzjoni minn ta’ qabel il-primarja sas-sekondarja (26.5 fil-mija).
  • Il-barranin ammontaw għal 17.4 fil-mija tat-total tal-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni minn ta’ qabel il-primarja sas-sekondarja.

Fis-sena akkademika 2023-2024, l-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja kienu jgħoddu mas-60,197 – żieda ta’ 1.2 fil-mija fuq is-sena akkademika taʼ qabel.

Il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ qabel il-primarja, tal-primarja u tas-sekondarja kienu subien (51.8 fil-mija) (Ċart nru 2). Matul is-sena akkademika 2023-2024, 45.5 fil-mija tal-istudenti rreġistrati kellhom bejn il-5 u l-10 snin, filwaqt li 38.1 fil-mija tal-istudenti kellhom bejn il-11 u l-15-il sena (Tabella nru 1; Ċarts nri 1 u 2).

Nota: Il-persentaġġi jista’ jkun ma jgħoddux għal mija fil-mija minħabba l-arrotondament.

L-istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-Istat irrappreżentaw 59.6 fil-mija tar-reġistrazzjonijiet kollha, filwaqt li 26.7 fil-mija attendew skejjel tal-knisja. L-istudenti rreġistrati fi skejjel indipendenti ammontaw għal 13.7 fil-mija tar-reġistrazzjonijiet kollha f’dawn il-livelli. L-għadd sħiħ ta’ studenti rreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni obbligatorja fl-2023-2024 kien ta’ 50,645. Minn dawn, 54.4 fil-mija attendew l-iskola primarja, filwaqt li l-45.6 fil-mija l-oħra attendew l-iskola sekondarja. Meta mqabblin mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel, l-istudenti żdiedu b’0.7 fil-mija u bi 2.3 fil-mija fl-iskejjel primarji u sekondarji, rispettivament (Tabella nru 3 u Ċart nru 3).

Id-daqs medju tal-klassi għall-iskejjel kollha fil-livell primarju kien ta’ 18.6-il student għal kull klassi, u 19.2-il student għal kull klassi fil-livell sekondarju. Meta ġie analizzat id-daqs tal-klassi skont it-tip ta’ skola, fl-iskejjel tal-Istat deher l-iżgħar daqs tal-klassijiet kemm fil-livell primarju kif ukoll f’dak sekondarju, filwaqt li l-iskejjel tal-knisja kellhom l-akbar daqs medju tal-klassijiet fiż-żewġ livelli. L-akbar daqs medju tal-klassijiet fl-edukazzjoni primarja deher fis-Sitt Sena bʼmedja ta’ 19.1-il  student għal kull klassi. Fl-edukazzjoni sekondarja, it-Tmien Sena rreġistrat l-akbar medja bi 19.8-il student għal kull klassi (Tabella nru 4).

Fl-2023-2024, id-distrett li jilqa’ fih l-akbar għadd ta’ livelli ta’ skejjel kien id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port (33.7 fil-mija), segwit mid-Distrett tan-Nofsinhar tal-Port (19.8 fil-mija) (Tabella nru 5).

Sadattant, il-maġġoranza tal-istudenti attendew skejjel li jinsabu fid-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port (37.6 fil-mija), segwiti mid-Distrett tan-Nofsinhar tal-Port (16.6 fil-mija). B’7.3 fil-mija tal-istudenti, id-distrett ta’ Għawdex u Kemmuna kellu fih l-iżgħar persentaġġ ta’ studenti mill-għadd kollu (Tabella nru 6 u Mappa nru 1).

Id-Distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port kellu joqogħdu fih aktar minn kwart tal-istudenti (26.5 fil-mija), filwaqt li 19.8 fil-mija tal-istudenti kienu joqogħdu fid-Distrett tat-Tramuntana (Tabella nru 7 u Mappa Nru 2).

Aktar minn żewġ terzi tal-istudenti attendew skejjel li qegħdin fid-distrett ta’ fejn joqogħdu (69.0 fil-mija). Bil-maqlub ta’ dan, 31.0 fil-mija tal-istudenti attendew skejjel f’distrett ieħor ʼil barra mid-distrett ta’ fejn joqogħdu (Ċart nru 4).

Matul is-sena 2023-2024, l-għadd ta’ studenti mhux Maltin, irreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ minn qabel il-primarja sas-sekondarja, żdied bi 8.3 fil-mija meta mqabbel mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel. Il-biċċa l-kbira tal-istudenti li mhumiex Maltin attendew istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-Istat jew privati. Kważi wieħed minn kull erbaʼ studenti li kienu rreġistrati fʼistituzzjonijiet privati ma kinux Maltin (24.8 fil-mija), filwaqt li dawn ammontaw għal 23.1 fil-mija fl-istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-Istat.

Il-maġġoranza assoluta tal-istudenti rreġistrati f’istituzzjonijiet immexxija mill-Knisja kienu Maltin (99.2 fil-mija). Matul l-2023-2024, 65.6 fil-mija tal-istudenti mhux Maltin irreġistrati fl-edukazzjoni ta’ minn qabel il-primarja sas-sekondarja kienu ċittadini ta’ pajjiżi terzi (Tabelli nru 8 u nru 9). 

Ħarsa lejn il-lingwi li kienu qed jitgħallmu l-istudenti fil-livell sekondarju turi li t-Taljan kien l-aktar lingwa popolari, bʼaktar minn nofs l-istudenti jitgħallmuh (53.3 fil-mija). Anqas minn kwart tgħallmu l-Franċiż (23.5 fil-mija), filwaqt li 16.1 fil-mija tgħallmu l-Ispanjol u 12.2 fil-mija tgħallmu l-Ġermaniż. Barra minn hekk, kien hemm żieda ta’ 8.5 fil-mija fl-għadd taʼ studenti li jitgħallmu l-Ispanjol meta mqabbel mas-sena akkademika ta’ qabel.

Meta wieħed iqabbel l-għażla tal-lingwa skont is-sess, l-akbar differenza bejn is-sessi tidher fil-lingwa Franċiża, meta f’din is-sena akkademika, 29.8 fil-mija tal-istudenti bniet tal-iskejjel sekondarji għażlu l-Franċiż, mentri 17.6 fil-mija tal-istudenti subien tas-sekondarja għamlu l-istess, bid-differenza tkun ta’ 12.2 punti perċentwali (Tabella nru 10 u Ċart nru 5).

Methodological Notes

1. Education statistics presented in this news release are processed by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on an annual basis in accordance with European Regulations (EC) 452/2008 and (EU) 912/2013. These regulations establish the basis of information to be collected from educational institutions at all levels of education and all types of institutions. By adhering to these regulations, all education statistics collected and processed by the NSO are comparable to other European countries following the same regulatory standards.

2. Data collection is carried out during April of each year. The reference period for the information provided is the end of March (31st March) of the reference academic year.

3. All information required for State administered educational institutions is obtained from register data provided directly from the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR). Questionnaires to pre-primary, primary and secondary non-State educational institutions are sent via email. All incoming questionnaires are processed through a custom-made computer software.

4. Students enrolled in pre-primary (excluding childcare), primary and secondary education are included in this news release. Figures include students enrolled in State, church and private institutions, unless otherwise specified.

5. Figures include students who attend special schools. Special schools are resource centres to support the inclusion of students with individual needs in all mainstream schools in Malta and Gozo.​

6. Education Statistics data is provided by NSO to Eurostat on an annual basis in a dedicated questionnaire.

8. Definitions:

● Age is calculated as at 1st January of the reference academic year. For example, for academic year 2023-2024, age is calculated as at 1st January 2024.

● Class refers to a group of students who are physically following a common course of study in the same space.

● Educational levels refer to an ordered set grouping education programmes in relation to gradations of learning experiences, as well as the knowledge, skills and competencies which each programme is designed to impart. The ISCED level reflects the degree of complexity and specialisation of the content of an education programme, from foundational to complex. 

Formal education is an institutionalised, intentional and planned type of education which is provided by public organisations and recognised private bodies. It consists primarily of initial education designed for children and young people before their first entry to the labour market. It also includes other types of education such as vocational, special needs and adult education provided they are recognised as part of the formal education system by the relevant national education authorities.

● General education refers to programmes that are designed to develop learners’ general knowledge, skills and competencies, as well as literacy and numeracy skills, often to prepare students for more advanced education programmes at the same or higher ISCED levels and to lay the foundation for lifelong learning. 

● Locality of school refers to the locality where the physical campus is registered. 

● Locality of residence refers to the locality where the student is recorded to reside. 

● Languages studied include foreign languages studied, excluding Maltese and English. Students may study more than one foreign language, or no foreign language at all.

● Mandatory education in Malta is compulsory for all children and youths aged from five (5) to fifteen (15) years, both year inclusive, as defined in Chapter 605 of the Laws of Malta (The Education Act). Compulsory education covers six years of primary education followed by five years of secondary education.

●  School levels refer to the stages of learning within the education system from pre-primary to secondary education. The number of school levels refer to the number of educational institutions for each level of education.
