Din l-istqarrija tal-aħbarijiet tippreżenta r-riżultati tar-reviżjonijiet interċensali għall-istatistika dwar il-popolazzjoni u l-migrazzjoni għas-snin 2012-2021. Dawn l-istimi jieħdu post l-istimi taʼ qabel. Iċ-ċifri għas-sena ta’ referenza 2022, li kienu stmati bl-użu taċ-Ċensiment tal-Popolazzjoni u d-Djar tal-2021 bħala bażi, qegħdin jiġu inklużi ukoll fʼdin l-istqarrija. Iċ-ċifri annwali tat-twelid ta’ trabi ħajjin minn residenti u tal-imwiet ta’ residenti ma kinux riveduti, iżda l-indikaturi tal-fertilità u tal-imwiet li huma stmati fuq il-popolazzjoni ġew riveduti minħabba li l-kalkolu tagħhom jiddependi fuq iċ-ċifri tal-popolazzjoni li kienu aġġornati bir-reviżjonijiet.

Mill-2012 għall-2022, il-popolazzjoni residenzjali taʼ Malta kibret bi 28.6 fil-mija u telgħet minn 421,464 għal 542,051.

Il-popolazzjoni

Mill-2012 għall-2022, il-popolazzjoni residenzjali taʼ Malta kibret bi 28.6 fil-mija u telgħet minn 421,464 għal 542,051. Din iż-żieda fil-popolazzjoni kienet prinċipalment riżultat ta’ tkabbir fil-popolazzjoni barranija. Filwaqt li l-popolazzjoni tal-Maltin żdiedet biss bʼ1.7 fil-mija — minn 398,099 għal 404,675, il-popolazzjoni tal-barranin kibret bʼħames darbiet, sabiex telgħet minn 23,365 fl-2012 għal 137,376 fl-2022 (Ċart nru 1).

Ċart nru 1. Stimi tal-popolazzjoni totali fl-aħħar tas-sena

Filwaqt li l-età medja tal-popolazzjoni fl-2022 baqgħet l-istess meta mqabbla mal-2012 — 39 sena, is-sehem tat-tfal u l-anzjani fil-popolazzjoni ċċaqlaq. Filwaqt li fl-2012 is-sehem tal-popolazzjoni minn 65 sena ’l fuq kien ta’ 17.1 fil-mija, dan żdied għal 18.6 fil-mija fl-2022. Min-naħa l-oħra, is-sehem tat-tfal ta’ 14-il sena jew inqas naqas minn 14.6 fil-mija fl-2012 għal 12.7 fil-mija fl-2022. Fl-2012, is-sehem tan-nisa kien kemxejn ogħla minn dak tal-irġiel: 50.2 fil-mija nisa u 49.8 fil-mija rġiel. Fl-2022, din ix-xejra inqalbet bis-sehem tal-irġiel li issa qiegħed jaqbeż ʼil dak tan-nisa: 52.5 fil-mija rġiel u 47.5 fil-mija nisa (Tabelli nri 1a-1c, Ċarts 2a u 2b).

Il-migrazzjoni

Bejn l-2012 u l-2022, Malta kellha migrazzjoni netta totali (l-għadd tal-immigranti li minnu jitnaqqas l-għadd tal-emigranti) taʼ 117,259 persuna. L-akbar għadd taʼ migranti netti kien fis-sena 2022 bʼ21,798 migrant nett u ssegwiha hemm is-sena 2019 bʼ21,225 migrant nett. Min-naħa l-oħra, is-sena 2020 kellha l-inqas għadd taʼ migrazzjoni netta matul dan il-perjodu, bʼ947 migrant nett (Ċart nru 3).

Ċart nru 3. Il-migrazzjoni netta totali annwali

Is-sehem tal-popolazzjoni barranija żdied minn 5.5 fil-mija fl-2012 għal 25.3 fil-mija fl-2022. Fl-2022, 69 fil-mija tal-popolazzjoni barranija kienu ċittadini mhux tal-UE, filwaqt li l-31 fil-mija l-oħra kienu ċittadini tal-UE. Huwa importanti li wieħed jirrimarka, li mill-2020, iċ-ċittadini tar-Renju Unit bdew jiġu inklużi maċ-cittadini mhux tal-UE (Tabella nru 7).

It-taqsim ġeografiku

Id-distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port baqa’ d-distrett bl-akbar ammont ta’ popolazzjoni residenzjali ta’ Malta. Fl-2022, 31.1 fil-mija tal-popolazzjoni kollha kienu residenti f’dan id-distrett. Min-naħa l-oħra, id-distrett ta’ Għawdex u Kemmuna baqa’ bl-iżgħar ammont ta’ popolazzjoni residenzjali ta’ Malta b’7.4 fil-mija biss tal-popolazzjoni kollha residenti f’dan id-distrett fl-2022 (Ċart nru 4).

Ċart nru 4. Stimi tal-popolazzjoni totali tal-aħħar tas-sena, bid-distrett tar-residenza

Fl-2022, l-Imdina baqgħet il-lokalità bl-iżgħar popolazzjoni, dik ta’ 202 residenti. Filwaqt li fl-2012 Birkirkara kienet il-lokalità bl-akbar għadd ta’ nies — 21,676 resident, fl-2022 San Pawl il-Baħar qabiżha meta sar jgħodd 35,419-il resident. Meta mqabbla mal-2012, il-popolazzjoni ta’ San Pawl il-Baħar aktar milli rduppjat. Is-sehem tal-barranin residenti żdied fil-lokalitajiet kollha meta wieħed iqabbel l-2022 mal-2012. L-Imsida kienet il-lokalità bl-akbar sehem ta’ residenti barranin fl-2022, bl-ammont ilaħħaq id-59.1 fil-mija tal-popolazzjoni tagħha. Din kienet segwita minn San Pawl il-Baħar bi 58.1 fil-mija ta’ residenti barranin. Min-naħa l-oħra, Ħad-Dingli kienet il-lokalità bl-inqas sehem ta’ barranin bi 2.7 fil-mija tal-popolazzjoni residenti (Tabella nru 8, Mapep 1a u 1b).

It-tkabbir irreġistrat fil-popolazzjoni bejn l-2012 u l-2022 wassal għal żieda fid-densità tal-popolazzjoni. Filwaqt li fl-2012 id-densità tal-popolazzjoni fil-Gżejjer Maltin kienet ta’ 1,337 resident għal kull kilometru kwadru, fl-2022 din żdiedet għal 1,721 għal kull kilometru kwadru. Fuq livell distrettwali, fl-2022 id-distrett tat-Tramuntana tal-Port kien id-distrett bl-akbar densità tal-popolazzjoni b’7,019-il resident għal kull kilometru kwadru. Min-naħa l-oħra, id-distrett ta’ Għawdex u Kemmuna kien d-distrett bl-inqas densità tal-popolazzjoni b’585 resident għal kull kilometru kwadru. Meta kienu kkunsidrati l-lokalitajiet individwalment, l-Għasri baqa’ bl-inqas densità tal-popolazzjoni f’Malta u Għawdex, b’103 resident għal kull kilometru kwadru fl-2022. Filwaqt li fl-2012 l-Isla kienet il-lokalità bl-akbar densità tal-popolazzjoni b’16,424 resident għal kull kilometru kwadru, fl-2022 Tas-Sliema saret il-lokalità bl-akbar densità tal-popolazzjoni b’16,287 resident għal kilometru kwadru (Tabella nru 10, Mapep nri 2a u 2b).

L-indikaturi tal-fertilità u tal-imwiet

Bejn l-2012 u l-2022, ir-rata tal-imwiet baqgħet relattivament stabbli, b’medja ta’ tmint imwiet ta’ residenti fis-sena għal kull elf resident fil-popolazzjoni ta’ nofs is-sena. Min-naħa l-oħra, ir-rata tat-twelid ġarrbet tnaqqis ġenerali tant li mit-twelid ta’ madwar 10 itrabi ħajjin minn residenti fl-2012, din ir-rata naqset għat-twelid ta’ tmint itrabi ħajjin minn residenti għal kull elf resident fil-popolazzjoni ta’ nofs is-sena fl-2022 (Ċart nru 5).

Ċart nru 5. Ir-rati tat-twelid u tal-imwiet għal kull elf resident fil-popolazzjoni taʼ nofs is-sena

Bħal fil-każ tar-rata tat-twelid, ir-rata totali tal-fertilità naqset ukoll matul dan il-perjodu. Fl-2012, ir-rata totali tal-fertilità kienet ta’ 1.43, iżda din niżlet għal 1.08 fl-2022 (Tabella nru 11). It-tnaqqis fir-rata totali tal-fertilità ġej mil-fatt li għalkemm in-numru totali ta’ trabi li jitwieldu ħajjin minn residenti baqa’ stabbli matul dan il-perjodu, in-numru ta’ nisa li għandhom l-età li jista’ jkollhom it-tfal żdied.

Matul dan il-perjodu, l-istennija tal-għomor tjiebet ġeneralment. L-istennija tal-għomor totali mat-twelid żdiedet minn 80.9 sena fl-2012 għal 82.3 sena fl-2022, filwaqt li l-istennija tal-għomor totali ta’ 65 sena żdiedet minn 19.4-il sena fl-2012 għal 20.5 sena fl-2022. In-nisa għad għandhom stennija tal-għomor aħjar mat-twelid u mal-65 sena meta mqabblin mal-irġiel, għalkemm id-distakk naqas xi ftit meta tqabbel l-2012 mal-2022 (Tabella nru 12).

This news release presents the results of the intercensal benchmark revisions of population and migration statistics for the time-series 2012 to 2021. These estimates supersede the previous estimates for this series. Data for reference year 2022, which were estimated using the 2021 Census of Population and Housing as base, are also being included in this release. Annual counts of resident live births and resident deaths were not revised, however fertility and mortality indicators estimated over the population were revised, since the computation of these estimates depends on population counts which were directly affected by these revisions.

Methodological Notes

1. Intercensal revisions are standard practice in demography and are conducted to align official statistics on population and migration between the two decennial Censuses. The Census of Population and Housing is a form of national stocktaking which provides a complete count of the population and living quarters. The most recent Census of Population and Housing was conducted in November 2021. Benchmarking against the Censuses ensures a continuous series that is aligned to the changes between the two time-points.

2. The intercensal revisions adjust for possible errors in the annual estimation of population count arising from over or under coverage in administrative data sources and inaccuracies in the mathematical models used to estimate components not available in the administrative sources.

3. The components of population change were examined and analysed as part of the revisions process. Annual counts of resident live births and resident deaths were not revised, however fertility and mortality indicators estimated over the population were revised, since the computation of these estimates depends on population counts which were directly affected by these revisions.

4. All population components are based on definitions provided for in the European Regulation (EU) No. 1260/2013 on European demographic statistics.

5. All migration components are based on definitions provided for in the European Regulation (EU) No. 862/2007 on Community statistics on migration and international protection.

6. Definitions:

● Crude death rate: the number of total resident deaths per thousand mid-year population.

● Crude birth rate: the number of total resident live births per thousand mid-year population.

● Emigration: the action by which a natural person leaves his or her usual residence in the territory of the Member State for a period that is, or is expected to last, a minimum of 12 months. This figure is measured by summing up the counts of all employment termination forms which ended during the reference year and residence permit holders who fail to extend their permits during the reference year, together with their dependants; resettled or repatriated asylum seekers who were previously given protection and other Maltese emigrants (i.e. persons who leave the country for a period of at least 12 months).

● Immigration: the action by which a natural person establishes his or her usual residence in a territory of a State for a period that is, or is expected to last, a minimum of 12 months. This figure is measured by summing up the count of all new employment engagement forms and residence permit holders, their dependants, asylum seekers granted protection, returned migrants and new adoptions of children from foreign countries.

● Life expectancy: a population based statistical measure of the average number of years a person has before death. Life expectancies can be calculated for any age and give the further number of years a person can on average expect to live given the age they have attained during the reference year.

● Mid-year population: Total mid-year population is calculated by averaging start-of-the-year and end-year population estimates.

● Total fertility rate: The number of children that would be born to a female if she were to live to the end of her child-bearing years and bear children in accordance with current age-specific fertility rates.

● Total population: all persons residing in Maltese Islands. The total population at the end of year t, is computed using the equation P_t = P_t-1 + B_t – D_t + I_t – E_t , where:

i. P_t is the total resident population at the end of year t,

ii. P_t-1 is the total resident population at the end of year t-1,

iii. B_t is the total number of babies whose birth parent was resident in Malta during year t,

iv. D_t is the total number of registered deaths of persons resident in Malta during year t,

v. I_t is the total immigration of both Maltese and foreign nationals registered during year t who immigrated with the intention to live in Malta for a period of at least 12 months,

vi. E_t is the total emigration of both Maltese and foreign nationals resident in Malta registered during year t who leave the country for a period of at least 12 months.

● Non-EU: any person who is not a citizen of the European Union. As of 2020, this includes citizens of the United Kingdom.

● Usual residence: as stipulated by European Regulation (EU) No.1260/2013, refers to the place where a person normally spends the daily period of rest, regardless of temporary absences for purposes of recreation, holidays, visits to friends and relatives, business, medical treatment or religious pilgrimage. Usual residents of a specific geographical area are:

i. those who have lived in their place of usual residence for a continuous period of at least 12 months before the reference time; or

ii. those who arrived in their place of usual residence during the 12 months before the reference time with the intention of staying there for at least one year.

● Usually resident population: refers to all persons who have their usual residence in a Member State at the reference time.

7. Sources:

● Demographic data in this release is based on records held by the Public Registry and the Directorate of Health Information and Research.

● Migration data is estimaed based on a number of administrative records. These registers are not designed for direct compilation of population statistics in line with the required definitions, therefore complex estimation techniques are used to derive meaningful population statistics from these sources. Moreover, when no appropriate sources are available, auxiliary sources like surveys are used to address data gaps. A list of relevant data sources is provided below:
